Week 5, Day 3

This morning's workout was much better, no easier, than yesterday. I did a 2 mile run/walk, but I didn't push myself as I did yesterday. Recall that the indoor track is 8 laps for 1 mile. I walked 4, jogged 8, sprinted 2, and walked 2. I concluded with an abdominal workout and stretched.

Week 5, Day 2

Dreadful.

That was the answer when I was asked by a lady in the gym this morning, "How was your run on the treadmill?" I tell ya, that treadmill whips my butt! I did complete the necessary mileage this morning, 2.5 miles, but it was difficult. It took me 28 minutes which is a much slower pace than my 9 min. mile. Ultimately, I would like to complete the 5K in under 30 minutes. We'll see....

Week 4, Days 6 & 7 and Week 5, Day 1

I traveled once again this past weekend, but I got my training in. Saturday morning I ran for 24 minutes. According to the schedule, I was supposed to do 2.25 miles. I can only hope that is what I accomplished.

I got back to town early Sunday afternoon and I headed to the gym for a 50 minute walk on the treadmill. After that I id an abdominal workout and stretched.

I was not up to working out this morning. Luckily, week 5, day 1 states "rest or run/walk." I chose the rest. I may go for a walk after work today. We'll see.

Week 4, Day 5

I like Fridays. Why do I like Fridays? Because according to my training schedule, every Friday is a rest day. No matter what, I don't workout on Fridays. I sleep in and I find that I need that extra sleep. It is like my body knows that, okay it is Friday. Don't wake up at 5:30 like you do Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. This morning I awakened about 6:15 and I was well rested. That is a good feeling.

Week 4, Day 4

Today's training called for a 1.5 mile run. I decided to run all out instead of a good pace like I did on Tuesday. I wanted to make sure my time for the mile run had not fallen off. It hasn't. My total time was 14 minutes 23 seconds. I completed 1 miles in 9 minutes 34 seconds. Not too bad. I also did an abdominal workout and finished with stretches.

Week 4, Day 3

I decided to cross train this morning. I did a 25 minute walking program on the treadmill. The program caused the treadmill to incline at a great at some points during the program. I can tell already my quads are going to be sore. I also did 10 minutes on the stairmaster. I did the speed interval program. I concluded with an abdominal workout and stretching.

Week 4, Day 2

24 minutes. That is how long it took me to run 2.25 miles this AM. I was very slow. Actually, I did it on purpose. My plan this morning was to run at the same pace throughout the entire run. I think that will help me in the long run.

In other news, today is Mardi Gras! Louisiana is my home and I would be off from work today, depending on the industry I was employed by, and heading to a parade either in Lafayette, New Roads, or New Orleans.

Week 4, Day 1

I decided to combination of run/walk this AM. I did a total of 2.25 miles by alternating walking for 2 laps and running for 2 laps. I walked a fast pace on the walk laps and I sprinted on the run laps. It took me about 20 minutes in all. I ended with a 10 minute abdominal workout and then I stretched.

Week 3, Day 7

I did 45 minutes on the treadmill this afternoon (the gym opens at noon). I didn't do a very aggressive program, just one that challenged me a wee bit. It had me at a steady pace and then would challenge me with a faster pace on a steeper incline. It was a good program and didn't raise my heart rate too much.

Tomorrow is a run/walk or rest day. I've already packed my gym bag so I c an make it to the gym first thing in the morning. If I get there early enough, very doubtful, I will do a run/walk program on the treadmill. If not, I'll do the same on the indoor track. Traditionally, I can't seem to make it there when they open the doors at 6 am, no matter how early I get up. I just can't seem to get out of the house prior to 5:50 or 5:55. Oh well, at least I'm going. :~)

Cold again & update

It is sunny, but cool out so I'm not going to walk outside this AM. My training today calls for a 40-60 minute walk. I'll go to the gym his afternoon and hit the treadmill. I think they open at 1 pm.

Last weekend and on into Monday and Tuesday I was traveling. I was concerned about how I was going to get my training in during that time, but it finally hit me that many hotels have fitness centers. Therefore, I took advantage of them. I used the treadmill to run or walk depending on what the day called for.

I find that running on the treadmill is very different than road running or running on a track. It offers a consistency in pace due to setting the speed on the machine. I can see an advantage to running on a treadmill, but also the disadvantage. The advantage is running at a steady pace. The disadvantage is the machine helping you run at a steady pace.

My plan is to use a combination of training locations: the treadmill, indoor track, outdoor track, and road running.

Week 3, Day 6

Brrr..it was cold out this morning. I wish the gym opened earlier than 9 AM on Saturday mornings. I was wide awake at 7 AM and ready to go from my 2 mile run. I braved the 25° F weather this AM, put on some layers, gloves, and a head band and took a run around the neighborhood. Honestly, I'm not sure if I actually did 2 miles. The run took me about 18 minutes and I've been clocking about 9 minutes per mile. I may have been slower this morning due to the cold.

Week 3, Day 5

This morning's training consisted of a 1.5 m run. I did it on the treadmill. Running on the treadmill is very different from road running and running on a track. Due to the consistency of setting the speed I wonder if I get a better workout with the run. I can say that I definitely sweat a lot more running on the treadmill. My goodness! I think I will try and run on the treadmill for at least one of my training days each week.

I still need to update on the training I did from last Friday to yesterday. Maybe I'll have a chance to do that later today.

Still here and training

I've been following my training regimen for the past few days, but I've been travelling so I was unable to post. I'll update my progress this evening.

In the meantime, aren't those some lovely running shoes (see pic in profile)? They are by New Balance. They are the New Balance Zip W8505. They are quite comfy.

Week 2, Day 4

Back in November and December I participated in a women's workout bootcamp. On the last day of the camp I did ran 1 mile in 9 min 30 sec. My goal was at the end of the camp was to do the mile in 10 minutes (my initial benchmark was 11 min).

This morning I timed myself for during the 1 mile portion of my 1.5 mile run. I am still at the same pace. It took 9 min 40 seconds to run 1 mile this AM . It feels good to know that I haven't lost all that I gained during the 2 months of the bootcamp.

In addition to the run this AM I did an abdominal workout. Tomorrow is a rest day. Thank goodness. I think my body needs a rest.

Week 2, Day 3

I went to the gym this morning and did 33 minutes on the stairmaster. The guide today stated it was a run/walk day. I decided to get in some additional cardio to help my stamina.

I also had a revelation about my upcoming travel. I don't have to run outside at those places or try and guesstimate about the distance I've run. It finally hit me that, more than likely, the hotels will have a fitness center I can use. I've never run on a treadmill before, but I may as well give it a shot. Yep! Just checked the website of one of the hotels and it definitely has a fitness center.

Hmmm..I said I was going to add links in the sidebar over the weekend. Well, that didn't happen. I'm going to work on that at some point this week.

update: links have now been added.

Knowing my time

As I pondered why I noted my time this AM, I realized that knowing it will be useful. I will be traveling a bit over the next few weeks to locales where I will not have access to a track and, in a few instances, my own transportation (to clock mileage). Therefore, knowing how long it takes me to run a certain distance I can estimate how far I've traveled. Eureka!

So today I did 1.75 m in about 17 minutes. On Thursday I have to do 1.5 miles. I'll time myself again. That way I can estimate how far I traveled on those days when I'm out of town.

Week 2, Day 2

I did 1.75 miles at the gym this morning. 14 laps of straight running with a bookend of 1 lap at the beginning and 1 lap at the end. According to my watch I ran the 1.75 m in 17 minutes. I can tell I was faster and slower on various laps. I think having a goal of overtaking a person I see in the distance helps me. I push myself more so than if I don't have a target ahead of me. One of these days I'm going to have to track my time per lap. Then I'll be able to tell if I'm consist from one lap to the next.

Power Walk

I did a 20 minute power walk this afternoon. Total distance was 1.5 miles.

Brr. It was sunny, but cold. The wind was whipping!

By the way, my 30 minute leisurely walk yesterday was 1.7 miles. For some reason, I have a need to know the distance I travel when I run/walk on the roads.

Week 1, Day 7 & Week 2, Day 1

Didn't post yesterday, but I did complete my daily training. I went for a 30 minute walk about 8 am. I would have preferred a 45 minute walk (smack dab in the middle of the 30-60 minute guideline), but I was pressed for time. So I did the bare minimum.

Today is the 1st day of the 2nd week of training. The challenging part about this week will be the weekend. I'm traveling the weekend and I've not decided how I will work in my training on Saturday & Sunday. Friday is easy because that is a rest day.

Anywho, this afternoon I think I will do a combination of run/walk.

Week 1, Day 6

The first week of training is almost done. This AM, in the cold, I ran 1.5 miles outside. Brrr! I decided to run on the track at the university (4 laps = 1 mile) this AM. I walked 1 lap, ran 6, and walked 1. I end the week tomorrow with a 30-60 minute walk.

Week 1, Day 5

Today is a rest day on my schedule. I think I really need that rest because it was quite difficult to get up this AM. Over the weekend I am going to update the blog with some links over the in the sidebar ---->.

Week 1, Day 4

The university is closed today due to the weather. Therefore, the gym is closed and there is no working out today. I can't run outside because there is precipitation in the air. I'm glad I did the run yesterday.
